Ryda Dog Car Seat Hammock

A hammock-style cover that slings between the front and rear headrests, so your dog sits in a fabric basin rather than on your back seat. The side flaps carry on up the doors, which is where most of the mud and hair actually ends up.

It covers the whole bench, has four storage pockets along the back of the front seats, and comes off for washing when it needs it.

Worth knowing before you buy

• This is not a safety restraint and we will not sell it as one. It is sold elsewhere with language about protecting dogs during braking. A hammock is a cover. It has not been crash tested, it is not a harness, and it will not restrain an animal in a collision. If you want your dog secured in the car, buy a crash-tested harness or a carrier and use this underneath it.
• It tears, and this is the single biggest complaint. Nearly half of the negative reviews are about durability, with buyers describing rips from ordinary use rather than abuse. The fabric handles hair, mud and water well. It does not handle claws well, and we are not going to call it scratchproof when its own reviewers say otherwise.
• Better for small and medium dogs. Buyers with large breeds consistently find the material too thin for the weight and the claw pressure.
• The clips are not well explained. Several buyers could not work out what the door-flap clips attach to. Expect to spend a few minutes on it.
