Where the heat actually is

The heating element runs across the back of the hand and along the fingers. The palm is not heated, and that is the right way round — the palm is the side pressed against a handlebar, a lead or a pocket, and it loses far less heat than the back of the hand does.

The supplier listing these come from advertises “360° palm and back of hand heating” and “5 heat levels up to 149°F”. The manufacturer’s own specification sheet for the same product says three levels, up to 131°F, heating on the back of the hand and fingers. Worth knowing before you buy

• On the highest setting the battery does not last long. Across this whole category owners report roughly an hour on full and two to three hours on the middle setting. Treat the top setting as something you use for ten minutes to get warm, then drop down.
• The fingertips are the coolest part of the glove. Touchscreen tips use conductive thread rather than a heating element, so the last centimetre of each finger warms by conduction rather than directly. This is true of nearly every touchscreen-compatible heated glove.
• There is a battery at each cuff and you will notice it. If you like a close glove under a fitted jacket sleeve, this will feel bulkier than you expect.
• These are commute-and-dog-walk gloves, not expedition gloves. In genuinely severe cold a heated glove at this price takes the edge off rather than keeping your hands warm indefinitely.
• Not machine washable. Take the batteries out and spot clean.
