The paper is thick enough that a fountain pen or a marker does not show through to the other side, so both faces of every sheet stay usable. The hardcover keeps its shape in a bag, and the binding lies flat when opened, so you are not fighting a curl to write near the spine. There is a ribbon marker, an elastic closure that stops the pages fanning open, and a pocket inside the back cover for receipts and loose notes. The plain cover suits a desk or a gift equally well.
