It looks like an ordinary bulb and behaves like one right up until the power goes out. Then it stays on. A 1200mAh cell inside charges while the light is running normally, and when the circuit dies the bulb switches to battery without you doing anything.
Put one in the hallway, one in the kitchen, and a power cut stops being a scramble for your phone torch. Unscrew it and it works as a lantern in your hand — useful in a loft, a shed, or a tent.
Read this before you order
This is a US-fit bulb: E26 base, 120 volts. It will not fit a European E27 socket and will not run on 230V mains. If you are ordering from outside the US, this is the wrong bulb and we would rather tell you now than process the return.
